Tony Cottrell, better known as Hi-Tek, is an American rapper and producer hailing from Ohio. The Cincinnati-based maestro created the sound that catapulted the independent New York rap renaissance into the mainstream in the late 1990s. His work with Mos Def and Talib Kweli as Black Star (“Definition,” “Respiration”), and with Talib Kweli as one-half of Reflection Eternal (“Fortified Live,” “The Blast”) were the blueprints for pushing his unique sound forward. Now established as one of the most dynamic and respected urban music producers, Hi-Tek is one of few beatsmiths to deliver music that is incredibly emotional. It cuts across all sounds, styles and genres while still containing powerful doses of soul.
